These are photos from the Hubble Telescope which can take high resolution photos due to its location outside of Earth's atmosphere. I started reading about them in a Washington Post article and found a treasure of images and additional information on Wiki Commons. It's hard to believe that they're real, but somehow they are. They're quietly humbling.

16,000 light-years away
A three-light-year-long pillar, bathed in the glow of light from hot, massive stars off the top of the image. Scorching radiation and fast winds from these stars are sculpting the pillar and causing new stars to form within it.
luke, i hope you know these are artist renderings.
ReplyDeleteKind of. They are photos taken from the Hubble. But then are heavily enhanced with colors to represent lights that aren't visible on the human light spectrum.
